2010-07-28 - 67 Cans for 67 Years - Mandela Day 2010
As the World celebrated the officially proclaimed international Mandela Day on 18 July 2010, so South Africans were called to action to give 67 minutes for 67 years. South Africans at home and abroad were asked to give 67 minutes of their time to perform a selfless act of kindness to assist their community in any way possible. The 67 minutes is a reflection on the number of years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for the rights of humanity – from his pivotal role in the anti-apartheid struggle, to his presidency, and finally, his work as mediator in peace talks and as an AIDS activist.
We decided to initiate a donation drive at the office, with the aim of collecting 67 cans (representing the 67 years) of food in order to donate to Nazareth House, a local charity in Vredehoek, Cape Town. A total of 90 cans and other non-perishable food items were collected and handed over to Sister Margaret of Nazareth House earlier this week.
The Sisters of Nazareth founded Nazareth House in 1881, and care for frail aged, terminally ill adults, and abandoned, abused and orphaned children. For over 100 years, the Sisters have steadfastly followed their mission to take care of the most vulnerable members of society, regardless of race or religion – a cause we are proud to support!
Although Nazareth House receives a small Government grant, it only covers for 27% of their overall costs. Donations are always received with much gratitude by the Sisters of Nazareth.
Should you wish to contribute, either email info@nazhouse.co.za or telephone +27 (0)21 461-1635, alternatively, monetary donations can be made online here.
