2006-08-29 - Linksys CIT200 Skype Kit
Initially launched in August 2003, Skype has since become one of the most used IP telephony programs around, with over 100 million users now registered. This software allows you to chat for free between PCs and also allows you to call landline numbers through its pre-paid ‘SkypeOut’ service. While it’s generally easy to handle such calls via a headset, Linksys makes things even easier with its CIT200 Skype Telephony Kit.
Installation is simple: run the supplied installation CD on the PC you want to use the CIT200 with and then just plug in the supplied USB base station. The base station links to the handset and operates on a frequency between 1.92GHz and 1.93GHz so it won’t interfere with any nearby wireless networks.
Once it is set-up, the handset functions exactly like any standard phone. You can dial in numbers manually or alternatively hit the ‘Skype’ button which connects to Skype on your PC and displays your full contact list. The names of those online are displayed first, along with those that are unavailable and finally, users that are offline.
During testing, we found its range quite acceptable, as we were able to maintain a voice chat with another Skype user whilst standing in another. Its audio quality is also good and besides the convenience this handset offers, you also gain a degree of privacy in that only you can hear what’s coming through the handset’s speaker (rather than through your PC’s speakers).
