2006-09-08 - Make cheap conference calls with Skype
There are Skype adaptors that let you use your desk phone to make Skype calls, Wi-Fi phones with pre-loaded Skype software, hybrid Skype and home phones and so on.
And now, there's one device that lets you make high fidelity multi-party conference calls with the free Internet service.
The Polycom Communicator (right) lets you make your Skype calls without picking up any handset.
The tiny PC accessory consists of twin microphones and a speaker, all of top-notch quality, that will let you be heard as clearly as you will hear the other party.
The microphones are so good, your entire group of friends or colleagues can speak together at the same time, much like the conference calls that corporations take part in regularly.
I managed to gather my family together to speak with my uncle in Auckland all at the same time.
It helps that Polycom makes the enterprise-grade conference call machines that I have seen in just about every corporation around Singapore.
The difference is that with Skype, your calls are free when calling another Skype user, or you pay very low rates if you are using SkypeOut to call traditional phone lines.
Because the device draws power from your PC, you won't need any power source. Just plug it in, install the software and fire up your Skype software (www.skype.com) and yak away.
There is also a standard 3.5mm jack for plugging in your earphones if you need privacy. And if your laptop speakers are not up to par, you can even use the Communicator as a gaming speaker!
