2007-03-08 - SKYPE TOPS 500 MILLION DOWNLOADS
Skype, the global Internet communications company, today announced that its software has been downloaded more than 500 million times by users around the world, extending its mark as one of the most popular free downloads of all time.
Skype™ makes it easy for anyone with a broadband internet connection to make free and very cheap unlimited calls worldwide.
This milestone was reached in slightly over 42 months time, counting from when Skype was first introduced in beta at the end of August 2003.

A little over three years ago, Skype developed a little piece of software that allowed anyone to experience high-quality, unlimited voice communication over the Internet. Today, people are using Skype to express themselves via free voice, video, conference calling and instant messaging communication, as well as Skype’s paid-for products including SkypeOut™, SkypeIn™, Skype Voicemail and the Skype Unlimited Calling plan.
SkypeOut is a premium service that allows global calling to public telephone numbers for local calling rates. SkypeIn is a premium service that allows Skype users to register for their own regular inbound telephone number for just $38 a year or $12 for three months. This way, friends, business colleagues or family members who aren’t already using Skype can call from ordinary fixed telephones or mobile phones, while Skype users receive and answer these calls in Skype – no matter where they are. SkypeIn also comes with a free Skype Voicemail subscription, enabling users to manage incoming voicemail messages.
The Skype Unlimited Calling plan is a paid annual subscription service that allows registered users to make 12 months of unlimited SkypeOut calls to any landline and mobile phones within the U.S. and Canada. The Skype Unlimited Calling plan is available for a flat rate of $29.95 per year in the U.S. or Cdn $35.00 per year in Canada.
